Our Philosophy

From the fairways of the most venerable courses of 15th century Scotland, to the design gems of today, the game of golf has provided personal challenge, fellowship and stringent competition for friends, family and some of the finest competitors of the game.  Golf is a sport based on honor, integrity and the enjoyment of competition across varying landscapes and environments. Great courses of today, and of years past, challenge the physical, stress the mental and have the ability to enlighten the soul as one makes their way through the natural beauty of these great and challenging landscapes.

While golf in its basic form is a collection of holes over which golfers navigate various hazards and terrain in hopes of completing the course in the fewest number of strokes, it is also an opportunity to create a unique and dynamic landscape where golfers can be exposed to the stunning beauty of nature along with the challenges that this great game has to offer. At its core, golf is an ‘experience’.  An opportunity for individuals to challenge themselves, and their golf abilities, while enjoying the great wonder of their environment.

Through our profound respect of the core values of golf, and our firm understanding of the history of this great game, Baker Golf Design has developed a design philosophy which allows us to create ‘experiences’ that stimulate the senses while creating fun, fair and challenging tests of golf.  We strive to create memorable designs which serve to enhance the existing landscapes and create an environment which challenges the body, enlightens the soul and allows golfers the opportunity to grow in their skills and understanding of the game.  From seaside to mountain, forest to desert and everywhere between, Baker Golf Design is dedicated to creating the finest golf course designs which respect the dynamic and everchanging beauty of nature.

Great golf begins with a great vision.  Before the first green is drawn, or the first hole is sketched across the landscape, it is critical that the design team has a firm understanding of the site, the surrounding environment, the developer’s vision and the challenges and constraints that a property has to offer.  The opportunity to create a successful project is closely intertwined with the design team’s understanding of the property, and this information is critical to creating a design vision which will lead to the development of great golf.  By properly evaluating a property through a detailed site inventory and analysis process, and a thorough review of the development goals for the project, Baker Golf Design is provided with the foundation that allows us to create a design vision which leads to the development of not only a great and unique golf design, but a concept that will produce a financially successful facility.

Sound strategic design, varying hole length and direction of play, balance of par and the proper visual setup and framing of golf holes are all key aspects of our design approach, and all lead to the development of a sound test of golf.  Our designs are geared toward creating facilities that provide the right level of challenge, and opportunity to improve, for the average player, while still providing the design characteristics required to challenge the better amateur and professional player.  Through the use creative design solutions, we are able to provide a collection of holes that can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities.
